Description

The new Wittpenn Bridge, a $480 million replacement vertical-lift bridge is the state’s first orthotropic bridge deck, a lightweight structural steel deck plate featuring longitudinal ribs and transverse floor beams under a wearing-surface covered steel plate. The reduced need for concrete in this orthotropic design increases structural efficiency and service life. The bridge carries Route 7 over the Hackensack River, connecting Kearny and Jersey City.
