Description

The iconic Verrazano Bridge connects Staten Island and Brooklyn. Serving approximately 200,000 commuters per day, the need for the preservation of this bridge was substantial. Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority released a project for the Upper Level Suspended Span Deck Replacement and Painting at the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, awarding the project to Tutor Perini Corporation in 2012. This restorative project came to a successful completion in 2017.

Scope

The scope of work consisted of the removal of the existing upper roadway deck and barrier and installation of a new upper level orthotropic deck, overlay, drainage systems, sign structures, lighting, and barriers. AEIS applied welding and non-destructive testing (NDT) expertise on this project. Our inspection and testing team performed extensive high-strength bolting, concrete, and soil inspections as well. The quality and compliance of project materials was evaluated and determined on a daily basis. Technical counsel was provided in daily collaboration with project teams to ensure that non-conformances were resolved to meet project requirements.
