SPECIAL INSPECTIONS

Structural Inspections

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The fundamental purpose of structural inspections is to confirm that an existing building or structures under consideration is safe for continued use under present occupancy. Structural inspection as the title implies, is a recommended list of services to provide proper judgement on structural stability of the existing buildings.

Chapter 33 of the NYC Building Code is specifically made in order to safeguard the public and the existing structures during demolition or construction. Structural inspection services are required by the law to mitigate risk during construction or demolition.

Deep excavations requires approved support of excavation drawings (SOE) designed by the professional engineers. AEIS engineers and inspectors carefully review the approved construction safety plans, support of excavation plans, and the foundation plans and ensure that these are followed by the contractor.

AEIS ensures that all sides of excavations, including related or resulting embankments are supported as specified in the drawings. SOE drawings must be site specific and must clearly illustrate all related protection and support of the excavation, including but not limited to retaining wall inspection, existing facade inspection, sloping, stepping, sheeting, shoring, and bracing.

As part of the structural inspection services, safety monitoring are also being made in order to monitor any existing structural cracks, building movement, vibrations, specified tolerances, and reporting criteria for when tolerances are exceeded. AEIS engineers and inspectors continuously check the soil or foundation work during dewatering processes as needed. Measures are taken to prevent settlement, slop failure, and damage to adjacent buildings, structures, and property affected by dewatering operations.

Services

Some of the inspection services and field tests that can be performed are:

  • Structural Stability Inspection of Existing Building Structures (STAB)
  • Structural Stability Inspection during removal of debris for full or partial demolition of a building using mechanical demolition equipment (MDEM)
  • Inspection of the methods employed in the process of strengthening the foundation of an existing adjacent building/structures in the construction site/s - Underpinning (UPIN)
  • Excavation, Sheeting, Bracing, and Shoring
  • Facade Safety Inspection

Other services can be performed to meet the needs of your project. Engage with an AEIS expert to discuss your project requirements and ensure a smooth inspection process.
