Mechanical, Electrical & Plumbing (MEP)


Inspection of any MEP systems is more than “does it work the way it should”. It requires a thorough understanding of the system and continuous engagement with the engineer to ensure that the commissioning of the system goes without a hitch and the installed system can provide the intended service life.

Regardless of the type of system required for inspection; a general checklist that is applicable to all systems includes, but is not limited to:

  • Verification that the components of the system are compete and per the manufacturers installation guidelines. The equipment is as specified and the installation is per approved construction documents.
  • Supports, hangers and vibration isolation equipment are properly sized, properly spaced and anchored to support the system – Including seismic bracing.
  • All piping systems were tested hydrostatically or pneumatically as required by their respective codes.
  • Flushing and Flow tests performed if part of system requirements.
  • Installation of required signage and safety instructions are in place.
  • Required painting and labeling of piping systems is complete, operational instructions and safety signage properly posted.
  • All related special inspections for each system is complete (e.g. compaction for underground piping, concrete encasement if required,etc.)

Testing more specific to certain systems may include but not be limited to:

  • Electrical components are installed and an electrical sign-off issued.
  • Ventilation balancing report is complete and in accordance with design documents and the system is operating as designed.
  • If mechanical equipment is set on the building exterior, is noise testing required to be performed?
  • Are fire and smoke dampers installed and functioning properly?

In summary, a basic checklist of any system would include; Are the components of the installed system those which were specified, has the system been installed per the contract documents, manufacturers requirements and the governing building codes, and have all tests required for that complete system been performed and the results in accordance with code requirements.
