Hardness Testing

Hardness, or Indentation hardness tests are used to determine the hardness of a material to deformation. There are several types of hardness tests. The material is indented until an impression is formed, then the impression is measured to determine the hardness of the material. Hardness tests can be performed on a macroscopic or microscopic scale. Indentation hardness roughly correlates with tensile strength.

Macrohardness, or macroindentation, is applied to tests with a larger test load, such as 1 kgf or greater. We have the capability to perform the following macroindentation tests:

  • Vickers hardness test (HV), 
  • Brinell hardness test (HB) BHN and HBW
  • Knoop hardness test (HK), 
  • Rockwell hardness test (HR), HRA, HRB and HRC 
  • Shore hardness test, for polymers, widely used in rubber industrials.

Microhardness, or microindentation, is applied to tests with lower loads, such as 1 to 1000 gf, or 2 N. We have the capability to perform the following microindentation tests:

  • Vickers hardness test (HV), 
  • Knoop hardness test (HK)
